You are installing a new vapor barrier, what happens to the old one?

Our best practices are that the old vapor barrier is removed before installing the new one.  The old barrier may trap moisture between the layers and can result in musty smells. Every once ina while we may recommend leaving the old barrier if it is in very good shape or there are other factors that make it advisable.
